On April 10th, 2025, HOMeAGE hosted the first day of its second international training and public lecture series in Ancona, Italy, focusing on the systems that support ageing in place (AIP). The event was held in collaboration with UNIVPM and INRCA IRCCS and brought together global experts, researchers, and policymakers for a day of insightful presentations and discussion.

The day began with a warm welcome from representatives of UNIVPM and INRCA IRCCS, followed by opening remarks from Micol Bronzini (UNIVPM) and Giovanni Lamura (INRCA IRCCS), and an introduction to the training programme by Kieran Walsh (University of Galway).

Morning Sessions – Public Lectures:

The first public session, chaired by Giovanni Lamura, featured Kai Leichsenring (European Centre for Social Welfare Policy and Research, Vienna), who examined the challenges of emerging long-term care systems in Europe. He addressed key issues such as governance, funding, service coordination, and the growing need for quality assurance in the face of population ageing.

Following this, Stefania Ilinca (WHO Regional Office for Europe) delivered a compelling talk on long-term care within the universal health coverage agenda, highlighting the importance of partnerships and policy-oriented research in driving systemic transformation across the European region.

Afternoon Session – Inclusive Housing:

In the afternoon, Rose Gilroy (Newcastle University, UK), chaired by Marja Aartsen (OsloMet), led a public session on inclusive and participatory approaches in housing. She explored the role of older people in shaping housing and service systems, the challenges of ensuring meaningful participation, and strategies for creating more equitable and responsive environments.

The sessions provided doctoral researchers and attendees with an opportunity to critically engage with both the theoretical and practical dimensions of support systems for ageing in place. The day also reinforced the importance of cross-sector partnerships, inclusive design, and evidence-based policy in shaping the future of long-term care and housing.
