HOMeAGE Doctoral Network Reflects on Inspiring Moments from the 5th Training Event
The HOMeAGE Doctoral Network Researchers have been reflecting on our 5th Doctoral Network Training Event, and one of the most powerful highlights came from hearing directly from our Reference Group — a vivid reminder of why this work truly matters.
Throughout the event, Reference Group members shared thoughtful insights that resonated deeply with the network, offering reflections not only on ageing research, but also on the human experiences and career journeys that shape it.
Rodd Bond spoke movingly about the importance of listening more closely to the realities of ageing:
“On ageing, there are profoundly human things that policy does not listen to […] Even when we look at ageing well and dependency, we are often still locked in the idea that independency is good and vulnerability is bad.”
Laura Christ captured the lived reality of ageing with striking simplicity: “You have to grow into being an older person”.
Amanda Warren’s reflections on navigating career choices between academia, policy, or business also struck a strong chord with many researchers:
“Go with what pulls you rather than what feels strictly rational. Share where you are and where you want to go with others. Whichever option one chooses, your role will still be to help translate research into real-world impact“.
Soteris Avgoustis offered a final reminder that patience is often one of the most important parts of any career journey, reinforcing the value of persistence and trust in long-term impact.
The Doctoral Researchers are graetful to the HOMeAGE Doctoral Network Reference Group members for the meaningful, insightful, and inspiring moments shared across the various training events held since 2023.
As Rodd Bond reminded us all that these conversations plant seeds — for better research, better policy, and more inclusive ageing societies.
